Abstract
Choline acetyltransferase (ChAT, E.C. 2.3.1.6) and acetylcholinesterase (AChE, E.C. 3.1.1.7) are important enzymes because of their role in the synthesis and hydrolysis of the chemical transmitter acetylcholine. ChAT catalyzes the formation of acetylcholine from acetyl-CoA and choline; AChE hydrolyzes acetylcholine into acetate and choline.
