Abstract

An increasing number of observations of charged particle precipitation at auroral latitudes during the last ten or fifteen years have indicated electrostatic acceleration of these particles through kilovolt potential drops along the geomagnetic field lines. Theoretically this seemed difficult to understand at first, although elementary knowledge of plasma experiments prompted Alfvén (1958) to suggest such acceleration through electrostatic double layers above or in the upper ionosphere.
