Critical Scattering of Light by a Two-Component Fluid

Theory of Light Scattering in Condensed Matter

Abstract

A phenomenological approach to the problem of predicting the critical correlation function of a binary liquid is discussed. The main physical ideas are emphasized, especially the analogy with relativistic field theory. The principal mathematical tool is Cauchy’s theorem and analytic continuation of the correlation function into the complex momentum plane. In this way the correlation function can be expressed by a dispersion relation involving a positive definite spectral function. The practical advantages of the method for fitting data are illustrated.

Work supported in part by the National Science Foundation and in part carried out under the auspices of the Center for Theoretical Physics and the Center of Materials Research.

Talk given at the first US-USSR Symposium on the Scattering of Light by Condensed Matter, Moscow May 26–30, 1975.
