Hypocalciuric Effect of Lithium in Man

Phosphate Metabolism

Abstract

Lithium has been shown to inhibit the adenylate cyclase, cyclic-AMP responses to arginine vasopressin in both in vivo (1–3) as well as in vitro assay systems (3–5). Alternatively, it has been shown that lithium may potentiate the cyclic AMP responses to other polypeptide hormones (6–7) although these effects have not been consistent (8). Additionally, lithium has been reported to have divergent effects on urinary calcium excretion in experimental animals (7–10) and man (11). Consequently, we studied the effects of chronic lithium administration on the renal handling of calcium and the renal response to the administration of parathyroid hormone. Though we demonstrated neither a potentiating nor inhibiting effect of lithium on the renal response to parathyroid hormone, we did observe a significant reduction in basal twenty-four hour urinary calcium excretion during lithium therapy.
