Factors Affecting the Recognition of the Dilated Biliary Tree in the Jaundiced Patient

  • Chapter
Ultrasound in Medicine

Abstract

Dilated biliary canaliculi are well visualized by grey-scale ultrasound techniques and were first reported by Taylor et al.1 In an early evaluation of the accuracy of grey-scale ultrasound in the differential diagnosis of extra- from intrahepatic obstruction, an accuracy of 97% was reported in the first 104 patients.2 These findings have been confirmed by further work using commercially available equipment,3 and have been confirmed by other authors.4
