The Social Context of Parental Behavior

A Perspective on Primate Socialization

  • Chapter
Parental Care in Mammals

Abstract

From birth, the nonhuman primate infant is an active participant in its social world. Although certain patterns of social behavior show ontogenetic changes indicative of the increasing social complexity of the infant, even the newborn is equipped with physical and behavioral capacities that initiate and influence social interactions. Generally, the first social partner the infant encounters is the mother, yet other members of the social group also contribute to the socialization of the infant. In the present chapter we will attempt to characterize and examine the social influences acting on the developing primate infant, starting with the infant itself and working outward to the mother and other immediate social companions. At each juncture we will attempt to specify some of the variables influencing the quantity and quality of social interactions provided to the infant and their influence on the infant’s behavior. The focus will primarily be on parental behavior, broadly defined as infant-directed behavior, and its influence on the socialization of the nonhuman primate infant.
