Abstract
By Far. Infrared (FIR) we mean the portion of the electromagnetic spectrum between 25 μm and 1 mm wavelength. In the past this region was the less studied and used especially for the lack of suitable sources. In fact frequency multiplication from microwaves suffer from exceedingly high power losses while the difference frequency mixing from near infrared or visible show a poor frequency stability and a low efficiency as a consequence of the reduced transparency in the FIR of the electrooptic crystals.
