Release of Bioactive Agents from Swellable Polymers: Theory and Experiments

  • Chapter
Recent Advances in Drug Delivery Systems

Abstract

In the past twenty years we have seen a considerable increase in the number of research studies, publications and patents in the area of controlled release systems for pharmaceutical applications. Langer and Peppas (1–3) and Peppas and Gurny (4) have reviewed various aspects of the preparation, structure and biocompatibility of polymers for pharmaceutical applications and have established methods for incorporation of drugs in and kinetic behavior from different types of controlled release devices. Other chapters in this book provide extensive analysis and experimental results of a variety of controlled release, drug-delivery polymeric systems.
