Experimental Studies of Magnetic Tricritical Points: Problems and Progress

  • Chapter
Multicritical Phenomena

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((NSSB,volume 106))

Abstract

Experimental and theoretical studies of tricritical phenomena have constituted an active field of research over the past decade. Early experiments on 3He>-4He mixtures1 and metamagnets2–5 were interpreted by Griffiths6 in terms of a new type of critical phenomenon involving the simultaneous criticality of two different densities, and a number of theoretical predictions were subsequently made concerning the nature of the singularities which might be expected at such a point.7–21
