Relationships Between Test Scores and Everyday Life Functioning

  • Chapter
Clinical Neuropsychology of Intervention

Abstract

The purpose of this chapter is to present a survey of available literature on the relationship of assessments to functioning levels in everyday life. It begins with a rationale for examining the two sets of data based on their commonality in cognitive functions which can be described in widely different terms by various disciplines. Following that is discussion of functional activity (outcome) measures, review of studies linking assessments with outcomes in medical and rehabilitation samples, review of special applications in educational and vocational settings, and a general summary with some recommendations for future research. Critical evaluation of the studies and tools used is minimized due to availability in original literature and present space limitations. Also excluded are studies focusing on validity and reliability of assessments, computer applications, and interventions aimed at restoration of physical, cognitive, and emotional deficits.
