Abstract
The Infraclass Metatheria contains only the single Order Marsupialia which includes some 250 species of living marsupials and at least 150 known fossil species (Kirsch and Calaby, 1977). Marsupials are found in two widely separated regions of the world, Australasia and the Americas (Stonehouse and Gilmore, 1977). The Australian marsupials are found in almost every habitat and include a wide range of insectivores, herbivores and carnivores, while the extant American marsupials are more limited in ecological range and are mainly small to medium sized carnivores (Kirsch and Calaby, 1977).
