Experiments on Heavy Electron and High Tc Oxide Superconductors

  • Chapter
Novel Superconductivity

Abstract

Two classes of superconducting materials, heavy electron superconductors (frequently referred to as “heavy fermion superconductors”)1,2 and superconducting oxides, 3 have attracted a considerable amount of attention in recent years because of their extraordinary superconducting properties which may be associated with an unconventional type of superconductivity. During the past year, two types of oxides containing a rare earth element (or yttrium), an alkaline earth element, and copper, have been found to exhibit superconductivity at high temperatures, one type at temperatures as high as ~100 K! These spectacular developments have brought an unprecedented level of excitement and intensity to research on these new oxides and related materials.
