Abstract

Yamamoto and Hayaishi (1967) first reported the presence of indoleamine 2,3-di- oxygenase [IDO; indoleamine: oxygen 2,3-oxidoreductase (decyclizing)] in rabbit intestine. This enzyme was also later found in mice (Yoshida et al., 1980), rats (Cook et al, 1980) and humans (Yamazaki et al., 1985), in which the highest activity was observed in the placenta, followed by lung, small intestine, and various other organs. IDO was markedly induced by various pathogens such as viruses and bacterial endotoxins (Yoshida and Hayaishi, 1978; Yoshida et al., 1979). Induction appears to be mediated by interferon-y and causes a marked increase in tryptophan catabolism (Takikawa et al., 1986). Enzyme induction was also observed by intraperitoneal transplantation of tumor cells to allogeneic strains of mice (Yoshida et al., 1984). A marked increase in IDO activity was also found in human lungs bearing cancer (Yasui et al., 1986)
