Refrigeration Capacity of a GM Refrigerator with Magnetic Regenerator Materials

Abstract

An investigation was made of the refrigeration capacity of a two-stage Gifford-McMahon (GM) refrigerator using a layer structural regenerator (multilayer regenerator) with magnetic regenerator materials.

To prove the effectiveness of the multilayer regenerator, we made two kinds of second regenerators with magnetic materials: a triplelayer regenerator with Er0.75Gd0.25Ni (a new magnetic regenerator material), Er3Co and Er0.9Yb0.1Ni, and a doublelayer regenerator with Er3Co and Er0.9Yb0.1Ni. We calculated the regenerator efficiency of the triplelayer regenerator using computer simulation to determine its optimum structure. We then made two kinds of second regenerators and their refrigeration capacities were experimentally compared.

From the experimental results we will discuss the optimum structure of the regenerator.
