Abstract

The velvetbean caterpillar, Anticarsia gemmatalis (Hübner) (Lepidoptera:Noctuidae), is a key defoliator of soybean in the Gulf Coast area of the United States (Nickels 1926, Douglas 1930, Hinds and Osterberger 1931, Greene 1976, Turnipseed and Kogan 1976) through Mexico (Pacheco 1970), Surinam (Van Dinther 1956), Colombia (Posada et al. 1970), Venezuela (Guagliumi 1966), Brazil (Ferreira 1970), and southward into Argentina (Rizzo 1972) (Fig. 6-1). This species is known by the common name “gusano terciopelo” in Mexico (Pena and Sifuentes 1972), and in Brazil it is referred to as “lagarta da soja” (Panizzi et al. 1977).
