Abstract
In an invited lecture to the 1971 IFIP Congress [Randell 71b*], Brian Randell of the University of Newcastle typified the situation current in the design, implementation and maintenance of computer software systems by showing a slide (Plate I)1 of a medieval battlefield with ranks aligned but carnage abounding and devastation everywhere.
