The Effects of Seasonal Variations in Stratification on Plankton Dynamics in Long Island Sound

  • Chapter
Tidal Mixing and Plankton Dynamics

Part of the book series: Lecture Notes on Coastal and Estuarine Studies ((COASTAL,volume 17))

Abstract

A considerable amount of physical and biological oceanographic research has been carried out on tidal mixing in shallow seas and estuaries, much of which is summarized in this volume. As is evident from the table of contents, most of the biological studies have focused on the relationships between mixing, light, nutrients and phytoplankton. Very little work has been done on higher trophic level organisms. This chapter attempts to show how herbivorous copepods fit into the “Tidal Mixing Paradigm,” using data from an ongoing study of the population dynamics of zooplankton in Long Island Sound, New York.
