Immunological Classification of “Unclassifiable” Acute Leukemia

  • Conference paper
Leukocyte Typing II

Abstract

Cytochemical and immunological markers have helped to elucidate the ontogeny of hematopoietic cells and have improved the subclassification of acute leukemia (reviewed in Refs. 1–3). Nonetheless, a small fraction (5–10%) of acute leukemias lack expression of standard cytochemical and immunological markers and have no morphological features providing evidence for cell lineage (4). Such cases—usually referred to as “acute unclassifiable leukemia” (AUL)—may reflect leukemic counterparts of the earliest hematopoietic stem cells. The development of monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) which include earlier differentiation stages in their reactivity may be helpful in determining cell type affiliation of such leukemic cells.
