Abstract
As in other instances, most information on trichomonad-cell (or, rarely, tissue) culture systems involves Trichomonas vaginalis. The data on in vitro interactions between lymphocytes, monocyte-macrophage lineage cells, and polymorphonuclear leukocytes, on the one hand, and trichomonads, on the other, are limited to the urogenital species. Therefore, this chapter deals primarily with experimental results obtained by using a variety of cell (and some tissue) cultures exposed to the urogenital trichomonad. The very limited information about the effects of Trichomonas tenax and Pentatrichomonas hominis on vertebrate cells in vitro is summarized at the end of the chapter.
