Effects of Sewage Sludge Application on Soil Microbial Processes and Soil Fertility

Advances in Soil Science

Part of the book series: Advances in Soil Science ((SOIL,volume 16))

Abstract

The ability of soil to supply nutrients for crop growth and the maintenance of soil physical conditions to optimize crop yield responses are the most important components of soil fertility that determine the productivity of agricultural systems. Many of the processes that influence soil fertility are mediated by microorganisms in the soil including fungi, bacteria, actinomycetes, and algae. The presence and activity of soil microorganisms are, therefore, of fundamental importance to the productivity of agricultural soils.
