Abstract
The choice of syringomyelia as one of the topics in a seminar dedicated to spinal cord pathology is, in my view, quite fitting. This is not a new disorder. In fact, cavitation of the spinal cord was already recognized by Estienne in 1546,1 and the term “syringomyelia,” meaning literally “cavity within the spinal cord” was coined by Olivier d’Angers in 1827.2 One other important landmark in the history of this condition is the distinction between hydromyelia, in which the cavity results from the dilatation of the central canal, and syringomyelia, in which the two are independent, made by Simon.3
