Abstract
Transcatheter occlusion of the renal artery and its branches has been used for a wide variety of indications. These include tumors, either in combination with subsequent nephrectomy or for palliation in poor surgical candidates, gross hematuria secondary to trauma, arteriovenous fistulas or other types of vascular malformations, and aneurysms. “Percutaneous transcatheter nephrectomy” may be an alternative to surgery in end-stage renal disease and the technique has also been utilized in patients with intractable symptoms from various types of fistula formation between the urinary tract and other organs such as the vagina or colon.
