Abstract
Inguinal hernias in children are almost always of the indirect variety and are the result of persistent patency of the processus vaginalis, which usually obliterates as a normal part of embryonic development. Reference to inguinal hernias can be found as early as 1552 BC in the Egyptian literature, although they were not treated surgically until 400 AD. These reports are essentially limited to the adult manifestations of inguinal hernia.
