Abstract

Currently, surgery of the anterior abdominal wall must meet high expectations of excellent—and permanent—results. In prophetic mode, Billroth envisaged in the 1870s the artificial “tissues of the density and toughness of fascia and tendon” used today as the treatment of choice for abdominal wall defects.
