Abstract

Minimally invasive surgery has ushered in many new advances within the field of surgery since its introduction two and a half decades ago. This evolution has dramatically improved hospital length of stay, improved postoperative pain, cosmesis, overall physiologic insult of surgery, and shortened time to return of physical activity when compared with conventional open surgical procedures. Improved imaging, instrumentation, and skills training within this field even led to the development of surgical robotics, microsurgery, and extension into surgical endoscopy via natural orifice surgery.
