Definition

Dynamic testing and dynamic assessment (DT/A) are two overlapping umbrella concepts for forms of testing and assessment in which instruction or intervention are integral aspects of the testing procedure. For some, dynamic assessment is a construct that can be used to describe a general approach. However, in line with more recent thinking (e.g., Sternberg and Grigorenko 2002), we differentiate between dynamic testing whereby the whole test procedure is transparent, objective, and repeatable and a wider conception of dynamic assessmentin which testing is paired with clinical and individualized intervention. Compared with conventional, static testing and assessment, DT/A provides information yielding greater insight into the nature of the individual’s cognitive functioning.
