Abstract

This essay is an exposition of a selection of prominent speeches given by women at the World’s Parliament of Religions at the Columbian Exposition held in Chicago in 1893. Twenty-three women addressed audiences on a variety of topics that marked the emergence of women as both religious leaders and heralds of the growing religious pluralism of the United States at the turn of the century. The author identifies and analyzes the content of several women’s speeches that offer insights into the fledgling interreligious movement of the time, and which give witness to key theoretical principles for interreligious education for today.
