Abstract
In cyanobacteria the plastoquinone (PQ) pool and the cytochrome b 6 f (cyt b 6 f) complex play a central role both in photosynthetic and respiratory pathways (Aoki and Katoh 1982; Aoki et al. 1983). The PQ pool accepts electrons from photosystem II (PSII) and respiratory dehydrogenases, and provides electrons for photosystem I (PSI), the terminal oxidase and possibly alternative oxidases. For this reason, the PQ pool is important for balancing photosynthetic and respiratory electron transport and for the regulation of the proteins involved. It is still unknown, however, how the redox state of the PQ pool regulates the various mechanisms, e.g. the state transitions.
