Ethylene-regulated floral volatile synthesis in Petunia × hybrida

Advances in Plant Ethylene Research

Ethylene is involved in the regulation of many physiological responses throughout plant development. In Petunia × hybrida “Mitchell Diploid” (MD), a rapid increase in endogenous ethylene is synthesized in the ovary coinciding with fertilization, and signaling a change in floral function from one of pollinator attraction to one of seed development. Following treatment of petunia flowers with exogenous ethylene, 76% of human olfactory panelists correctly identify a difference in floral aroma when compared to the control (air treatment).
