Military geography is a broad and dynamic subject with boundaries that can be difficult to delineate clearly and that change with time and circumstance. The two key fundamental aspects of military geography at all spatial scales are the physical and cultural landscapes. This paper considers the military operating environment as the foundation of military geography and illustrates the importance of the physical and cultural landscapes at different spatial scales to military operations in war.
