The Extent, Nature and Responses to Workplace Violence Globally: Issues and Findings

  • Chapter
The Handbook of Security

Abstract

Workplace violence (WV) transcends national and international borders; it happens to employees in all types of occupation categories across different job settings (Kodellas et al., 2011). Current workplace practices, cultural and organizational norms and social structures continue to place workers’ lives at risk of victimization. A lack of clear definitions, the absence of formal legislation and, in some cases, organization-specific policies to adequately regulate and penalize violent behaviour in the workplace, and the existence of cultural values that tolerate violent behaviour are some of the contributing factors for WV (Chappell and Di Martino, 2000).
