Abstract
Reconstruction in the German Democratic Republic (GDR) had to overcome a number of problems, which put the country into a position marked by serious disadvantages in comparison with West Germany. First, though her towns were less heavily bombed than West Germany’s, the average size of the apartments in the GDR was smaller, the age of the apartments was higher (see Appendix, Table 13.1) and the standard of equipment of the apartments tended to remain below the level of western nations (see Appendix, Table 13.3, row 6). In international comparison, the GDR was at the level of Italy. Only with regard to the number of persons per housing unit was the GDR in a better position than the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG). This is one of the reasons why she could afford to build fairly small apartments, even by East European standards (see Appendix, Table 13.2, column 1).
