Domiciliary midwifery care, including traditional birth attendants

  • Chapter
Maternal and Child Health Around the World

Abstract

The care given to a pregnant woman in her home is known as domiciliary midwifery care. Although emphasis is usually centred on the home delivery of the pregnant woman, in actual fact this care is a total one, embracing prenatal, intranatal and postpartum management. In highly developed countries of the world, domiciliary midwifery care is a dying service — but not yet dead. In fact in New Zealand, the United States of America, and Sweden (FIGO/ICM, 1966) the deliveries that take place in hospitals or in institutions, where a trained doctor, midwife or nurse is available, account for 95.4%, 97% and 99.6% of deliveries respectively.
