Abstract
The widespread occurrence of toxigenic fungi in foods and the potent carcinogenic action of aflatoxin to various laboratory animals have caused much speculation on the possible relationships between mycotoxin ingestion and the high incidence of malignant hepatoma in man in Africa. The possibility that mycotoxins other than aflatoxin may be responsible has been stressed and sterigmatocystin, a metabolite of the moulds Aspergillus nidulans, Aspergillus versicolor and a Bipolaris sp., chemically related to aflatoxin, was therefore studied.
