Surveillance of Antibiotic Resistance in Developing Countries: Needs, Constraints and Realities

Antimicrobial Resistance in Developing Countries

Abstract

Surveillance for antimicrobial resistance is important in terms of defining prevention and treatment strategies. While surveillance is routinely and efficiently carried out in developed countries, several major constraints often make it impossible for developing countries to carry out major surveillance programmes in this field. This chapter reviews the problems faced by the developing world in carrying out effective surveillance for antibiotic resistance and briefly describes the available data.
