Abstract

Lens abnormalities covered in this chapter include lens opacities (cataracts), abnormal lens position (subluxation), and spherophakia. Despite dramatic improvements in the treatment of infantile cataracts, cataracts continue to be a major cause of decreased vision and blindness in children. By far the most common cause of poor visual results after pediatric cataract surgery is irreversible amblyopia. The clinician should be aware of the systemic implications of pediatric cataracts and sublux lenses, as these ocular disorders may be the first presenting sign of important systemic diseases.
