Abstract

We have shown that the line shape of core line XPS data from metals provides detailed information regarding the many-body response of the conduction electrons. The results are in good agreement with the theory of Mahan and Nozieres and DeDominicis, and serve to resolve the controversy regarding the origin of the x-ray absorption edge anomalies in the simple metals, Na, Mg, and Al. The theory also describes the line shapes of the noble and other simple metals. In transition metals the high d-electron density of states produces new phenomena, such as satellites and truncated line shapes, which are understood at least in principle.
