Abstract

The objective of paper to present Variable Structure Control in historical perspective from the late fifties along with related research. The author tries to sketch the events that gave birth and were associated with the further development of this interesting research area. In many books, survey papers the authors mention that the research in this area were initiated in the former Soviet Union about 40 years ago and then the sliding mode control methodology has been receiving much more attention from the international control community within the last two decades. In author’s opinion this paper is a good chance to describe what happened before “the last two decades”, to demonstrate the initial ideas and to mention the researchers actively working at the initial stage. Their names and contributions deserve to be mentioned because the results were published mainly in Russian and practically unknown to the colleagues outside the Soviet Union.
