Abstract

A broad classification is proposed for half-metallic ferromagnets, and examples of each type are given. Most half-metals are transition metal oxides, sulfides or Heusler alloys. The problems of defining and measuring spin polarization are discussed, and the principles of the various methods available are outlined. Some half-metallic characteristics other than integral spin moment are presented.
