Abstract
Titanium(IV) oxide is continuing to attract wide interest as the photosensitizer for a large variety of photocatalytic reactions. Yet, the mechanisms of the photoreactions occurring at this semiconducting material are still poorly understood. In an attempt to clarify the existing ambiguities, the experimental evidence concerning the nature and role of the intermediates involved in the light-induced charge transfer reactions at TiO2 is analyzed. Pathways for the photo-oxidation reactions, consistent with the available experimental data, are considered.
