Abstract

The basic ingredients of various “one-dimensional” classical fusion models are reviewed. Effects of the conservative potential and of energy dissipation on the fusion cross section are considered, and a method for the deduction of an empirical nucleus-nucleus potential from experimental fusion cross sections is discussed. Finally attention is drawn to limitations of the simple one-dimensional models which become important at high energies and for heavy systems.
