Part of the book series: Solid Mechanics and Its Applications ((SMIA,volume 137))

Abstract

The problem of coupling electromagnetic or acoustic waves into a dielectric waveguide with minimal energy loss is formulated as a structural (topology) optimization problem. Optimal solutions are shown to attain at least one material constraint, almost everywhere in the design domain. A numerical optimization procedure using a level set method is proposed, and results from numerical experiments are described.
