Coring and Drilling Equipment and Procedures for Recovery of Long Lacustrine Sequences

Tracking Environmental Change Using Lake Sediments

Part of the book series: Developments in Paleoenvironmental Research ((DPER,volume 1))

Summary

Owing to the increasing interest in continental drilling in retrieving palaeoclimatic archives from extant lakes, a compilation and description of drilling equipment available for continuous and undisturbed sampling (>50 m) of soft sediment from a platform floating on a lake surface is provided. For those systems operated by scientific institutions, at least one scientist with PAGES-related research experience is part of the management structure for the drilling equipment. In the case of commercial companies, an interest has been indicated for cooperative scientific studies. These systems use multiple-entry coring. Most use core barrels with liners. They can drill through tens to hundreds of meters of water and through similar thicknesses of sediment. The recovered sedimentary sequence is of a quality such that palaeoclimatic multiproxy and high-resolution (less than a mm) analyses should be possible.
