Detection of Virulence Factors in Uropathogenic Escherichia Coli Isolated from Humans, Dogs and Cats in Portugal

Genes and Proteins Underlying Microbial Urinary Tract Virulence

Part of the book series: Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology ((AEMB,volume 485))

Conclusion

Genotypic differences regarding virulence factors between human and animal E. coli strains were observed in this work. They consisted mainly on the frequencies and type of adhesin encoded operons detected, which may reveal uropathogenic E. coli adaptation to different host cell receptors. Low detection of the cnf1 gene in human hemolytic E. coli strains suggests the possibility that, in these strains, other cytotoxins may be involved in the pathogenesis of urinary tract infection.

Simultaneous presence of 4 or more virulence factors was more important in animal (12/40), than in human (1/90) E. coli strains. This may be due to the fact that these animal strains caused primary urinary tract infection (11/40). Simultaneous carriage of virulence determinants by these strains may occur in fundamental gene blocks, previously designated as “pathogenicity-associated-islands“. This hypothesis is under investigation.
