Abstract
Feminism has changed the way social scientists think about gender. At the same time, gender, like class and ethnicity, continues to be a contested topic. Here, we begin by briefly tracing the development of ideas about gender and the relationship between the different positions on gender and ideas about citizenship and political participation. The major section of this chapter presents our data on how our respondents experience gender, and how that affects their ideas about, and participation in, politics.
