Abstract

Although the terms are usually used interchangeably, ‘work’ and ‘employment’ are different concepts, and the distinction is particularly important to the construction of gender roles. While work includes labour that yields products and services that are essential to the sustainability of the family and society, if the value generated as a result of work has only a ‘use value’ rather than a ‘market value’, it is not included in employment and income statistics. The term ‘employment’ is usually used in reference to enumerated labour; people are considered to be employed if they receive wages or salaries for their labour or earn income by running their own businesses through self-employment. (Although, exceptions exist, for example in the case of female labourers in the agricultural sector of Turkey discussed later in this paper.)
