Treatment of Pregnancy-Associated Breast Cancer

Abstract

Purpose of Review

Pregnancy-associated breast cancer (PABC) is the most common malignancy diagnosed in women of childbearing age and is increasing in frequency as the average age of pregnancy rises. Outcomes for PABC are similar to age- and stage-matched controls. In this review, we discuss current treatment recommendations for PABC.

Recent Findings

Treatment of PABC involves complex coordination by a multi-disciplinary team of providers including surgical, radiation, and medical specialists. The timing and administration of these therapies must be tailored to account for the pregnancy in order to keep both woman and fetus safe. Additional data is needed on the safety of newer breast cancer therapies during pregnancy.

Summary

With close oversight, breast cancer therapy can be delivered effectively for the patient and safely for the developing fetus.
