Efficient Photocatalytic Degradation of 2-Methylisoborneol by Zn-Al-La Multi-Metal Oxide Composites Derived from LDH

Abstract

Odor substances in the environment can cause drinking water safety problems and also have significant negative effects on human habitat and ecological safety. Dimethyl isoborneol (2-methylisoborneol, abbreviated as 2-MIB) is the most typical odor compound and can not be efficiently removed with general water supply and drainage treatment methods. In this research, basing on the characteristics of layered double hydroxide (LDH) materials, a series of Zn-based mixed metal oxides (Zn-MMO) including the rare earth element La were designed and synthesized. The catalytic degradation performance of the material for 2-MIB under simulated sunlight was investigated. The results showed that Zn-Al-La-MMO materials have good photocatalytic ability for 2-MIB and can achieve more than 95% removal rate for the initial concentration of 200 ng/L 2-MIB. The adsorption effect contribute about 20% removal of 2-MIB. Both Zn-Al-MMO and Zn-Al-La-MMO materials have good stability and the removal efficiency of 2-MIB kept almost unaffected in the five replicate experiments. The residual concentration of 2-MIB after photocatalysis treatment can meet the requirements of Chinese national drinking water standards (10 ng/L). The results of this study can provide relevant theoretical and technical support for the treatment of odor pollutants in aqueous environment by photocatalytic technology.
