Bacterial Peptides and Bacteriocins as Novel Treatment for Prostate Cancer

Abstract

Prostate cancer is well known as the most diagnostic urinary system tumor in the male population. The most conventional cancer therapy is surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy which all face limitations and challenges in the treatment of cancer that also has different side effects on cancerous patients. Despite several efforts in the field of cancer therapy, still, there aren’t any effective therapeutic approaches. In looking for a new effective therapy without or with at least side effects, bacteria, and their metabolites attract attention as anticancer agents due to their features such as specific toxicity on tumor cells, their easy modification, and survival ability in hypoxic conditions within the tumors. However, the main limitations of peptide-based therapy for prostate cancer are a brief half-life, low bioavailability, subpar pharmacokinetics, and protease sensitivity. The present study aimed to review the current literature on bacteria and their metabolites that are used as anticancer agents in the treatment of prostate cancer.
