  1. Because this book is constructed through these extensive fieldnotes, I rely heavily on Brisman’s own words throughout this review, quoting his passages at length, in order to provide the context necessary for my analysis.

  2. While Brisman leaves the text in the lower case and the punctuation at a simple question mark, what I hear is, “WHAT THE FUCK?!?!?!?” Or, perhaps, that was my own reaction.
